A job's real cost often includes additional labour costs, such as top-ups, paid rest breaks, and holidays. These were previously only known when you ran payroll, as they depend on the average hourly rates for each employee. See below for more information on how Tātou calculates job cost to ensure it aligns with your businesses needs. If you have any queries then please get in touch to discuss.

The Cost section on each job provides you with a breakdown of additional labour costs by running these payroll period calculations for you. |
What does "Estimated costs" mean?
Tātou’s labour costs are subject to change until the payroll period is complete. Any new job that gets added may affect the average rates for employees, and therefore the top-ups, paid rest breaks, etc.

An example of an in-progress job is where the job is from Wednesday, today is Thursday and your payroll period is Monday to Sunday. |
How it works
We assess all jobs within your payroll period window and look at each employee's average hourly rate for contract work. From this, we can calculate the top-ups (if any), paid rest breaks (if any), and holiday costs that need to be incorporated to the job cost.

The exact calculations depend on your organisation settings. You can view these in the Tātou Office main menu under |
Top-ups
When an employee's average hourly rate (for contract work) for the payroll period is below minimum wage they often require an hourly rate top-up to ensure the employee is paid fairly.
Note |
---|
In some cases, a job's top-ups can be negative. This can happen when one or more of the job's employees were topped-up, but they were over minimum wage for this particular job. |
Example
On Bob’s Tātou employee profile, he has an agreed hourly rate of $25, with Topup to agreed hourly rate enabled. If Bob did not have this enabled, Bob’s top-up rate would fall back to the legal minimum wage of that pay period.

Day | Time Worked | Hourly Rate | Base Cost | Top-up |
---|---|---|---|---|
Mon | 8 hours | $29 | 8 hours x $29/hour = $232 | 8 hours x ($25 minimum rate - $29 hourly rate) = -$32 |
Tue | 8 hours | $26 | 8 hours x $26/hour = $208 | 8 hours x ($25 minimum rate - $26 hourly rate) = -$8 |
Wed | 8 hours | $19 | 8 hours x $19/hour = $152 | 8 hours x ($25 minimum rate - $19 hourly rate) = $48 |
Thu | 8 hours | $26 | 8 hours x $26/hour = $208 | 8 hours x ($25 minimum rate - $26 hourly rate) = -$8 |
Fri | 8 hours | $15 | 8 hours x $15/hour = $120 | 8 hours x ($25 minimum rate - $15 hourly rate) = $80 |
40 hours | $23 average | $920 total | $80 total |
